‘The Other Hand’ is a beautiful story about the unusual friendship between two women – one a young Nigerian refugee and the other a middle class English woman. The two witnessed a tragedy on a beach in Nigeria that has far reaching consequences into the other’s life. Despite the themes in the book – detention centres, the divide between the rich and poor, the loss of a parent – this is not a sad book. The writing is superb and the characters are stunning, this is a book for anyone who enjoyed ‘The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas’ and ‘The Book Thief’.
